ReWorks is the solid waste management authority for Summit County.  Our official name is The Summit Akron Solid Waste Management Authority.  However, in effort to better deliver on our mission while building awareness of our vision, we began doing business as ReWorks in February 2013.

There are 52 solid waste management authorities/districts covering the 88 counties of Ohio.  Some counties combined efforts, and others created standalone entities.  Created under Ohio House Bill 592 in 1989, solid waste management authorities/districts have the mission to reduce reliance on landfills and must create solid waste plans to fulfill that mission.

At least every 10 years, ReWorks must create, receive approval, and implement a solid waste plan. The plan serves two main objectives to provide for the management of solid waste generated in Summit County and to demonstrate how ReWorks will achieve the recycling and reduction goals of the state solid waste plan.

ReWorks is funded by a "generation fee" that is collected for every ton of solid waste (i.e. trash) that is generated within Summit County. The $5 per ton generation fee is submitted to ReWorks by the landfills and transfer stations that receive trash coming from Summit County residents and businesses. This fee funds programs, services, and outreach on recycling, composting, waste reduction, and other materials management opportunities for Summit County residents, municipalities, and businesses.
